There go those awful Marines again! You just can't trust them to slack off at all, they always step up to challenge and help out when they're needed! Currently those wily, rascal, jarheads are providing the ultimate in community service to California with equipment and personnel to help fight the devastating fires. I didn't see any photos of those Code Pink radicals helping to fight any fires. I guess they don't do community service.
The Marine Corps on Friday sent four large, water-dropping CH-46 helicopters to the fire zones.
The aircraft from the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station were dispatched in response to a request for state fire officials. The request was approved by Defense Department officials.
Miramar spokesman Maj. Jason Johnston said the helicopters and their Marine crews will be deployed for up to 30 days.
Each helicopter is equipped with large buckets suspended from the airframe that can scoop water and drop it where fire officials direct.
Many of the troops from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing taking part in the assignment recently returned from Iraq, Johnston said.
